Kitchen Essentials: Cookware

Cookware is a must when you are cooking
Let’s continue with our Kitchen Essentials series, today we are going to discuss cookware. Without it, you won’t be able to prepare a single meal. It’s so important that even the person that says “I can’t cook” has one of these. Remember, don’t worry if you don’t understand the terminology: having the right tool for the dream meal is the goal.



Cookware is what you need when you are cooking. Imagine that you have the ingredients, and you used the preparation tools to start with the recipe; but what now? You are going to use this utensils to prepare them as you want.

Cookware

-Stainless steel skillet: the star of the kitchen and your new best friend, no joking! The skillet is suitable for frying, searing, sautéing, browning, among other functions. For all of these you will need one of high quality, ideally stainless steel.


-Sauté pan: it looks like a skillet, but it’s different in style and uses. It has a flat bottom and highest sides. It’s better for cooking sauces, and sear and braise meat that can later go to the oven.


-Small saucepan: if you live alone or there is only two of you, a lightweight and easy-to-handle saucepan is what you need. This utensil is useful for preparing small portions of soups, stew, pasta or sauces.


-Medium saucepan: it’s excellent for soups, stews, and long cooking meats. Can be used in the oven or under the oven broiler. It’s also dishwasher safe.


-Large pot: perfect for big families and reunions because you can prepare larger dishes like soups, stews, pasta or sauces. The stainless steel material is the best so it can last you for a lifetime. They usually are dishwasher and oven safe, so be creative with them, and start cooking for your entire family.


-Cast-iron skillet: the oldest cookware in existence, it has been part of every kitchen in the world for over 2,000 years. Nowadays, it is made of heavy cast iron and pre-seasoned (that way the food will never stick). Amazing for the stove and oven alike.


-Grill pan: if you don’t have a barbecue, or it’s cold outside and you don’t want to grill while you are freezing, this pan is what you need. It has become very popular in the last years because of the commodity that brings. You can use it on the stove and forget about charcoal, propane, gas, and intense cleaning after the cookout. In summer it’s fantastic for burgers, fish, meatballs, marinated vegetables, and any food that will look amazing with the grill lines.


-Casserole dish: great if you want a single dish for an entire meal with your family, like  lasagna or a casserole of your favorite choice. Commonly, the casserole dishes are made of porcelain and fit for the oven and oven broiler. Dishwasher and microwave safe, too.


-Large pot: the mother of pots, this tool it’s the one that your granny will have to serve food for everyone in the family reunions. It works perfectly with soups or stews for a large number of people, so think twice before buying one of this if you are living alone or starting a small family.
